Xiaomi Mi 11 5G Review: The Thinnest And Lightest Phone In The History Of Xiaomi

Xiaomi released the Mi 11 series, but unlike the Mi 11 Pro and the Mi 11 Ultra, the Mi 11 5G does not focus on performance and extreme stacking but concentrates on thinness and lightness, instead.

Using optimized technology, Xiaomi restricted the weight to 159 grams without compromising on the screen size and battery capacity. With 6.81mm thickness, the Mi 11 5G is the lightest and thinnest Xiaomi phone in history.

The phone is currently in the pre-sale stage. The 8GB + 128G model will set you back 2,299 yuan, while the slightly larger 8GB + 256G variant carries a 2,599 yuan price tag. You can follow this link to get your hands on the Mi 11 5G for $689 from Giztop.

The phone comes in multiple eye-catching color options including, Bingfeng black (black), sweet lychee (white), kiwi fruit (green), and cherry blossoms. Loose powder (pink), cool mint (blue), summer lemon (yellow), a variety of fresh colors. Let’s dive into more details about the Xiaomi Mi 11 5G phone.

    Thin and Light

Phone makers would adopt either one of these three methods to make a thin and light phone in the past – a small screen, small battery, or plastic back cover. However, that’s not the case with the Mi 11 5G, which features a 6.55-inch 1080P flexible AMOLED straight screen.

Moreover, the black edges aren’t thick, the three sides are only 1.88mm, the chin is 2.75mm, while the screen-to-body ratio is good too. The screen supports a 90Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate with 800nit global maximum brightness.

Color accuracy is JNCD≈0.32, △E≈0.36 and it supports P3 wide color gamut, and 1.07 billion color display. DC dimming is not supported, but when searching for DC in the system interface, it is found that the system has reserved some relevant entrances, meaning, it can be supplemented by OTA in the future.

The phone maker has not used plastic to reduce the device’s overall weight. It is made of AG frosted glass on the back, which helps minimize fingerprint stains. The three-camera module, which is placed in the upper left corner has a similar design as the Mi 11 standard version.

There is a magnesium alloy MDA plastic middle frame. Even though the thickness, the symmetrical dual speakers of the Mi 11 are gone, it still supports the double speaker of the earpiece and the infrared remote control of Xiaomi’s signature is still there.

Located on the side, the power button has a fingerprint design. The machine measures 160.53mm x 75.72mm x 6.81mm and weighs only 159 grams, the battery achieves 4250mAh and supports 33W wired flash charging.

    Qualcomm’s Mid-Range SoC Update

The Xiaomi Mi 11 5G officially launched the Snapdragon 780G processor. It uses Samsung’s 5nm process like the Snapdragon 888. The 700 series SoCs were all 2+6 architectures, but the Snapdragon 780G uses the architecture – 1 A78 core with the highest frequency of 2.4Ghz + 3 cores with the highest frequency of 2.2Ghz A78 mid-core + 4 small A55 cores with the highest clock speed of 1.9Ghz.

The measured GeekBench5 scores 806 points for single-core and 2931 points for multi-core, both close to the level of Snapdragon 855+. The Xiaomi Mi 11 5G uses the new Adreno 642 GPU, which is a 50 percent improvement over the previous generation Snapdragon 768G.

The measured 3Dmark running scores have also reached the level of Snapdragon 855. While the improvement is not as large as the CPU part, it is brilliant in the mid-segment SoC market.

By integrating the X53 baseband, the Snapdragon 780G also supports 5G networks, dual-mode 5G, and the peak download speed can reach 3.3Gbps. The X53 does not seem to support millimeter waves. Note that the support of Snapdragon 780G for wifi6e and Bluetooth 5.2 is the same.

Regrettably, the 780G still only supports the memory specifications of LPDDR4X at the highest. As a result, the storage situation of the Xiaomi Mi 11 5G is LPDDR4X memory + UFS2.2 flash memory. The running score can be seen in the figure below.

Compared with UFS3.0, the continuous reading is better. There is a certain gap and the speed of other projects is similar so, smooth daily use is not a challenge.

In the AnTuTu running score V9, it scored 540205 points at room temperature, which is slightly worse than the previous generation flagship Xiaomi Mi 10, and it is close to MediaTek’s flagship SoC. The performance of the 780G has a considerable improvement and the running score performance is quite good.

In terms of gaming performance, we tested Glory of Kings. The Mi 11 5G has been adapted to the 90-frame mode of the game. It can be stabilized at 85-90 frames in the early stage of the game, but in the later large-scale team battles, there will be fluctuations and the final 30-minute average frame rate is 75.2 frames.

The next game is Yuan Shen. The 780G is still difficult to control the highest quality in the highest quality of the game, so it was necessary to reduce to medium quality for playing. The game was much smoother after this adjustment.

The 30-minute average frame rate is 48 frames and there was no problem with the daily play. When playing the game, the power consumption of the whole machine reached the highest at 5.1w, and the temperature of the back cover was also the hottest at about 44 degrees Celcius.

After 30 minutes of Honor of Kings, Peace Elite, Call of Duty, and Pharaoh, for two hours of intensive use, the 4250mAh battery remained about 51 percent. The performance was quite good as far as battery life is concerned.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 does not come with its own charger and charging cable in the package. You need to purchase the 33w fast charge in a packaged version. It charges 50 percent in 27 minutes and from 1 percent to 100 percent in 61 minutes.

    Triple Camera Setup

The Mi 11 5G uses the classic main camera, telephoto macro, ultra-wide-angle lens camera setup. All three lenses have applicable scenes and there is no make-up lens.

The 64MP main camera sensor model is Samsung’s s5kgw3, which uses a large aperture of f/1.79 and a 6P lens. The actual image quality is good, and the picture is sharp and clear during the day.

At night, it can automatically recognize and enter the night scene mode, using the multi-frame synthesis to increase the brightness. The image quality is satisfactory and the highlight suppression is done well.

At night, you can use the long exposure mode to capture pictures of unique traffic effects. The brightness is acceptable under extremely low light, but the noise is a bit too much.

The sensor of the 5MP macro lens is S5K5E9YX04 from Qunli, and the imaging quality is average. It is still possible to meet the occasional need of shooting far or close.

The 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens is from Sony’s iMX355, f/2.2 aperture, 1.12μm, can shoot 119° super wide-angle, can take wider scenery, and more group photos. However, there is some smearing feeling after zooming in.

Aside from that, there is a multi-camera recording function, which allows two Xiaomi phones to shoot at the same time, real-time image transmission to achieve a dual-camera shooting effect. This is a useful feature for video creators.

Most thin and light mid-range mobile phones compromise on screen size, battery size, and performance. To buy a relatively balanced mid-range mobile phone, we need to consider mobile phones that weigh over 200 grams.

However, the Xiaomi Mi 11 5G is an exception. The phone sports a 6.55-inch large screen and weighs just 159 grams. The Mi 11 5G is the thin and lightest mobile phone in the history of the Chinese phone manufacturer. You can visit this link to purchase the Mi 11 5G for just $689 from Giztop.
