Realme V15 Review: A Practical Phone With Dual 5G Specs, 50W Flash Charging, And Eye-Catching Koi Color

Realme confirmed the existence of the Realme Koi series back in Dec.. 2019, with the first teaser suggesting that the series could allude to an upcoming Snapdragon 888 SoC powered flagship phone from the popular brand.

Multiple reports doing the rounds online at the time indicated that the first Realme Koi series phone could come bearing a Realme V15 moniker. On Jan. 7, 2021, Realme China’s President, Xu Qi announced the Realme V15 smartphone on Weibo at 2 PM (local time).

The phone’s rear design, as seen in the poster Xu Qi posted, seems to be inspired by Koi ornamental fish found in Japan. You can buy the Realme V15 for $289 from Giztop by following this link. Xu Qi said the V5 series naming rules are V5, V15, V25, and so on.

    Color scheme

The color presentation of the phone’s back cover is simply amazing. The red, yellow, and blue primary colors of the back cover of the V15 are pure, while the gradient between the different colors is light, especially green, which is nearly invisible. You can achieve various effects with different light sources.

The Realme logo is placed in the lower-left corner, and the “DARE TO LEAP” brand Slogan has been embedded between the back glass and the multilayer optical coating. The phone comes in three color options, but compared with Koi, Crescent Silver and Mirror Lake Blue are more low-key.

The back cover looks similar to the previous Realme V5, but it is more capable of resisting fingerprints and dirt. The V15 adopts a new design scheme for the camera module, giving the three cameras extra bumps. The contours of each camera, however, are consistent in terms of thickness and are not obtrusive visually.

The V15 replaced the LCD material of V5 with the Samsung AMOLED screen. The phone weighs in at 176 grams and its thickness is 8.3mm, while the previous V5 weighed in at 194 grams. Although the 3.5mm headphone jack has been removed, the phone comes with a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter.

Moreover, the V15 has a mainstream screen fingerprint, which is more intuitive to use. The biggest highlight of the V15 design, however, is the introduction of the “national tide” element. Those who want to be low-key can go for the crescent silver and mirror lake blue color options.

    Under the hood

The Realme V15 is designed to offer competitiveness within 2,000 yuan so it understandably packs a MediaTek 800U SoC, along with a 64MP main camera, a 4310mAh large battery, dual SIM dual 5G support, and 50W fast charging.

This is not the first time the SoC of MediaTek Dimensity 800U has been used in a Realme product, as it was first used in the Realme X7. It is worth noting that the Dimensity 800U is not the iterative version of 800, but actually the overclocked version of the MediaTek Dimensity 720.

In terms of CPU, the Dimensity 800U uses a design of 2 large cores + 6 small cores, which is similar to Dimensity 720, but the main frequency of the two A76 cores is 2.4GHz, and the small core of A55 is 2.0GHz. In other words, the CPU performance of Dimensity 800U is slightly better than Dimensity 720, which is an increase of 11 percent, especially in single-core performance.

The Dimensity 800U and Dimensity 720 come with Arm Mali-G57 MC3. In Q3 2020, MediaTek dethroned Qualcomm as the world’s largest chip manufacturer, taking a significant 31 percent of the market share and performing exceedingly well in the $100-$250 price range.

MediaTek’s is currently more focused on 5G mid-range chip mid-range models and its chips are capable of meeting the manufacturer’s “dual card dual 5G” demand. The Dimensity 800U delivers a performance comparable to the Gaoxiaolong 765G and Dimensity 800.

Equipped with Dimensity 800U, the Realme V15 maintains a stable output of 60 frames under the ultra-high quality of “Honor of Kings” and “QQ Speed”. In “Peace Elite” using the balanced and ultra-high frame rate settings, the V15 ran at almost 40 full frames. The CPU shows only about 50 percent of the load, while the GPU shows 99 percent at this time.

The Realme V15 houses a 64MP Samsung main camera, with an 8MP 119° ultra-wide-angle and a 2MP macro camera at the back. Upfront, there’s a 16MP selfie camera for self-portraits and video calling.

The main camera supports Tetracell pixel four-in-one, with a daily output of 16MP, and the sensor size is 1/1.97 inches. The single-pixel after synthesis is 1.4μm, bringing better latitude and low-light performance to photos.

In the shooting interface, the V15 offers a total of “ultra-wide-angle, 1x, 2x, 5x” four angles of view to quickly switch. It is worth noting that only the ultra-wide-angle will call the 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, while the other telephoto modes rely on Crop from the 64MP main camera.

Just like the previous V5, the Realme V15 retails for 1399 yuan but offers a 50W high-power fast charge, Dimensity 800U chip, a 64MP main camera, and a Samsung AMOLED screen, all of which are big improvements.

Aside from upgraded specs, the V15 sports enhanced design and offer more colors. You can follow this link to purchase the Realme V15 via Giztop for $289.
