OPPO K9 Review: A New 5G Phone With Snapdragon 768G SoC, 65W Charging And 90Hz Screen

OPPO announced the OPPO K9 5G smartphone in China on May 6. The much-awaited OPPO K7 5G successor is the first K series phone from the brand to feature a high refresh rate.

Currently available for $369 on Giztop, the OPPO K9 5G smartphone boasts an impressive array of features that we will be checking out further in this review. So without further ado, let’s dive straight into the details.

The OPPO K9 is available in two color options including Spades K (black) and Wings of Symphony (blue gradient). The use of gradual color technology makes the color on the back of the Wings of Symphony variant unpredictable.

Pink or gold color can be seen on the lower part of the frame. It shows a silver-blue color when the phone is held in hand. You can check out the different colors that can be seen at different angles in the pictures below.

The Wings of Symphony variant does not adopt the more common AG frosting technology but uses a process that is similar to shiny glass. The texture of the fuselage feels like an oil transfer layer on the rear shell.

The dimensions of the OPPO K9 are 159.1×73.4×8.0mm, and it weighs 172 grams, making it a very thin and light 5G phone. As far as design and workmanship are concerned, the phone deserves its own positioning and price.

The bottom of the phone houses a speaker, Type-C, microphone, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. A small microphone opening has been placed at the top.

The power button is located on the right side, while the volume rocker is placed on the left side, along with the SIM card slot. The dual SIM card slot is placed above the volume button.

The OPPO K9 features a 6.43-inch OLED single-hole screen, which offers a high resolution of 2400×1080 pixels, a 20:9 screen ratio, 410 PPI, and is packed using the COF process. The screen ratio reaches up to 91.7 percent, according to officials.

The screen offers a maximum brightness of 430 nits, a maximum brightness of 600 nits in daylight, and a maximum contrast of 1 million:1. Moreover, it supports a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate.

It also uses E1PRO luminescent materials and does not consume a lot of power.

    Battery and charging

OPPO K9 supports industry-leading 65W flash charging and draws its juices from a large 4300mAh battery. OPPO officials claim the K9 can be charged up to 60 percent in 15 minutes, and takes 38 minutes to be fully charged.

The picture below shows that it took 40 minutes to charge 1 percent to 100 percent, and the phone can be charged to 81 percent in 30 minutes.

The K9 is powered by a 7nm process 5G integrated chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 768G, which supports 6 5G frequency bands. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 768G processor was released in May 2020.

The processor is integrated with NSA/SA dual-mode 5G baseband and has a fifth-generation AIE engine, along with an Adreno 620 GPU.

As far as the CPU is concerned, the Kryo 475 frequency reaches 2.8GHz, which is 15 percent higher than the Snapdragon 765G. For the GPU part, the Adreno 620 is also higher than the Snapdragon 765G.

The Snapdragon 768G also supports a 120Hz screen, some Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, GPU driver upgrades, and more.

Let us check out the running score performance. In the image below, the Antutu running score of the OPPO K9 is 456,000+, which is more than 51 percent of the devices.

In the Androbench test, the reading speed is 980MB/s, which is an ideal performance of UFS 2.1.

Now, let us check out OPPO K9’s performance in terms of mobile gaming. The first game is Peace Elite with smooth image quality and extreme frame rate. The average frame rate of the game is 55fps.

In Call of Duty: Mobile, the image quality was set at high, with the extreme frame rate (up to HD image quality can be selected, however, the frame rate does not support the limit). In three minutes of tactical team competition mode, the average frame reached 59.1fsp, which is a full-frame performance.

Without changing the image quality, the Abnormal Frenzy Mode was selected with a longer gaming time and more stringent performance requirements. During the 25 minutes of playing the game, OPPO K9 reached an average frame rate of 57.7fps.

Around 13 minutes, there were frame rate fluctuations. Moreover, you can feel the instability of the frame rate during the game.

The fluctuation is due to the massive zombies in the game. Interestingly, the frame rate seems to stabilize in the final big Boss part of the game.

The Original God was also tested. The optimization of this game is poor and even the Snapdragon 888 struggled to provide stable frame operation. The game image quality was set on medium-low with a 60fps frame rate, motion blur, and the Bloom were turned off.

As shown in the image below, during the 20 minutes of playing The Original God game, the average frame rate was 42.6fps with satisfactory overall performance. The frame rate usually seemed stable.

In general, the performance of the OPPO K9 is ideal for playing games like Peace Elite, King of Glory, and Call of Duty: Mobile.

In the photography department, the OPPO K9 features a triple camera module including a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle, and 2MP macros. It supports video super anti-shake 3.0, AI beauty, and AI recognition lighl.

Let’s check out the samples below:

The 64MP camera offers a good resolution performance, but the sharpness is slightly higher in a low-light environment. The ultra-wide-angle performance lives by the expectations.

When you zoom in on the details, you can see a few smear marks. As far as night photography is concerned, the OPPO K9 handles the sky and neon colors well. The dynamic range is not high, and the highlights cannot be suppressed.

Occasional noise can be seen in the sky. Alternatively, you can manually select the night scene mode for shooting. The handheld time is about is 4 seconds, and it reaches about 12 seconds in some extremely dark environments.

The OPPO K9 is a mid-range product housed in a thinner body and flagship fast charging support. On the downside, it does not offer an impressive imaging performance like most flagship phones.

It is a great choice for those concerned about product design and comprehensive experience performance. The 8GB+128GB version retails for 1999 yuan, the 8GB+256GB is priced at 2199 yuan. You can follow this link to purchase the OPPO K9 for $369 from Giztop.
