OnePlus 9R Review: A Gaming-Centric Phone That Delivers Next Level Performance

The gaming-centric OnePlus 9R smartphone was released as part of the OnePlus 9 series earlier this year. The new generation of the flagship OnePlus 9R comes with direct screen texture.

After some minor changes to the hardware, it was upgraded to the ColorOS For OnePlus. OnePlus filled the gap in the product series of the Snapdragon 870 mobile phone.

This is the first time the Chinese handset maker has launched an R series of phones. The 8GB RAM+128GB ROM version is available for 2,999 yuan, while the 8GB RAM+256GB ROM model retails for 3,299 yuan.

The 8GB RAM+128GB ROM model can be yours for $549, and the 8GB RAM+256GB ROM version will set you back $619 on Giztop. The phone is available in two color options including blue and black. You can follow this link to place your order.

    Design

The OnePlus R comes in the trademark long strip red packaging. It comprises a 65w charging kit and a customized frosted protective shell. The phone retains the design elements of the OnePlus 8T.

Its weight is 189 grams and the phone’s thickness is 8.4mm. The phone’s length is 160.7mm and the width is about 74.1mm. An 8T phone case or phone film fits the OnePlus 9R perfectly.

On the back, the OnePlus R has a special glass material, which avoids fingerprints. The color scheme is the ink rock black style, which was introduced during the OnePlus 6 era. It is officially called the Black Island.

Just like its predecessors, the OnePlus 9R uses the same metal middle frame. It also uses a similar three-stage switch design and has no earphone jack like the previous generation.

It sports a 6.55-inch AMOLED flexible hole-drilling straight screen, which uses the COP packaging process, making the four-sided borders extremely narrow. The upper and lower have the same width, and the screen-to-body ratio is extremely high.

The screen offers 1080P resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. The JNCD average value is reduced to around 0.3, and it supports HDR10 + certification.

The screen’s peak brightness is as high as 1100nit, and each screen has been factory-calibrated to ensure superior screen color accuracy and color display. The design of the OnePlus 9R is multiplied by the OnePlus 8T but is more stable in color matching.

    Performance

In the GeekBench4 test, which shows the theoretical performance of the CPU, the OnePlus 9R scored 4692 single-core and 12792 multi-core. In GeekBench5, the OnePlus 9R scored 998 single-core and 3192 multi-core, which belongs to the Snapdragon. This is the normal level of the 870 models.

In the 3Dmark, which represents the performance of the game, the OnePlus 9R scored 9188 points for a slingshot and 4286 points for wildlife. In the AndroBench5 test, which shows storage performance, the phone’s running points are shown in the picture below.

In the AnTuTu test, the phone’s running score is 708013 points. This is in line with the normal performance of the Snapdragon 870 model.

OnePlus has added the smart temperature control center to the OnePlus 9R, which can achieve full firepower, coupled with the e-sports mode in the game space. OnePlus also introduced the split-type mobile game shoulder button.

You can experience the thrill of a mechanical button without a handle through an external Omron micro-motion button, which also comes in handy while playing shooting games. In the Call of Duty Mobile Games, it can be opened to the high-definition limit frame rate and the operation is quite smooth.

The operation is stable at 60 frames, and the final 30-minute average frame rate reached 58.8 frames. The hottest part of the back is only 39 degrees Celcius. In Peace Elite, you can drive to the HDR limit frame rate.

While playing the 30-minute game, the average frame rate was 59.8 frames and there was no stuttering, and the hottest part of the back was only 38.2 degrees Celcius. Peace Elite has been adapted to the 4D vibration system, meaning, the Haptic X-axis linear motor can be used in the game for vibration feedback.

The ultra-high quality 90 frames have been adapted for King of Glory, but only in the early portion, the full 90 frames can be run. The later large-scale team battles stabilize at about 80 frames, but the frame rate is smooth.

Stuttering, the final 30-minute average frame rate is 81.4 frames, and the hottest part of the back is 38.8 degrees Celcius.

The pressure is greater while running Yuan Shen. The Snapdragon 870 struggles to cope with the highest quality Yuan Shen. The OnePlus 9R can run to 60 frames in the first 12 minutes, but the final 30-minute average frame rate is 44.8 frames.

The hottest part of the back reached 40.1 degrees Celcius. It is advised to reduce to medium quality if you want to play smoothly for a long time. The performance of the power consumption of the Snapdragon 870 is still good.

Since the OnePlus 9R is equipped with a 65W fast charge, the phone can be recharged very quickly. It takes only 15 minutes to charge 60 percent, and 33 minutes to fully charge the phone, which is about 9 minutes faster than the OnePlus 8T.

    Cameras

OnePlus 9R has four lenses including a 48MP classic Sony IMX586 main camera, 16MP 123-degree ultra-wide-angle lens, macro lens, and black and white lens. The main lens supports optical image stabilization, which is ideal for shooting various scenes. Let’s check out the samples.

While capturing pictures the main camera automatically recognizes the object and calls HDR and AI. The final image quality is good with pleasing colors.

You need to manually turn the night scene mode on, and the system will use the effect of multi-frame synthesis to increase the brightness.

The highlight suppression in night scene mode is also good and the night sky is relatively pure.

The OnePlus 9R comes with the Cyberpunk filter, which was exclusive to the customized version of Cyberpunk. Using the filter adds a special flavor.

The 16MP 123-degree ultra-wide-angle lens has good imaging quality. It is not a makeup lens and the distortion control is impressive as well.

The macro lens is capable of achieving 3CM close-range focusing and deliver satisfactory imaging quality.

    The System

The previous OnePlus Hydrogen OS system was associated with lightness and conciseness, but as the OnePlus rose to popularity, the native system of the OnePlus Hydrogen OS struggled to adapt to the needs of the domestic special environment.

OnePlus has replaced the system kernel with the hydrogen taste based on maintaining the hydrogen taste such as desktop layout, live wallpaper, icons, ringtones, and notification sounds. With Big Brother’s ColorOS, this offers the best choice for new, as well as old user experience.

The animation is smooth and natural and the original missing small window applications, custom AOD, privacy protection, and game space are also well arranged. On the downside, the meditation mode is missing.

OnePlus provides the ROOT warranty and convenient BL unlocking service. This is ideal for users who like tossing.

    Verdict

OnePlus 9R is a well-balanced sub-flagship. It has an upgraded SoC and has struck a perfect balance between workmanship and cost-effectiveness.

Bearing a price tag of 3,000 yuan, the OnePlus 9R is a very competitive flagship. You can follow this link to get your hands on the OnePlus 9R smartphone from Giztop.
